SIB, the Italian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Società Italiana di Biochimica e Biologia Molecolare), was established on June 28, 1951, following several decades of scientific activities within the Italian community in the fields of “physiological and pathological chemistry”, and stemming from cultural contributions of the medical and chemical faculties.
SIB gathers about 1000 members, whose scientific interests are organized into eight thematic groups covering specific branches of molecular biosciences (Biochemical Education, Biotechnologies, Computational & Systems Biology, Membranes, Nucleic Acids, Nutrition & Environment, Proteins, Tumor Biochemistry). Since 2020, the Young SIB Section (for members under 35 years of age) promotes networking among young biochemists all over Europe, favoring international collaborations and careers.
The SIB mission is to promote teaching, research, discovery and diffusion of biochemistry throughout the national community, and social awareness of the roles and potential presented by biochemistry and molecular biology in unravelling the molecular and cellular mechanisms of biological processes, human health and disease, environment protection, and nutrition.
SIB fosters the diffusion of culture and activities in the fields of molecular biosciences through the organization of the Society congress, thematic workshops, PhD student schools, meetings of the internal groups, scientific exchange by young researchers, and participation in international activities in the biochemistry domain.
SIB is federated with 18 Italian Societies in the field of life sciences and is an active member of the Federation of the European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and of the International Union for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB).
